Beginning of April

I'm fairly new to Salt Lake City.  I moved here from Orange County, California.  Things are much different here.  The culture, the life style, the architecture.  I work in the Avenues in SLC.  Anyone who is familiar with Salt Lake is familiar with the Avenues.  The Avenues are old, beautiful homes set on the northeast bench of the Wasatch Mountains.  They are a closely laid out, grid-like streets and avenues.  Most of the homes in the Avs (as the locals call it) are historical.  The architecture is what drew my eye to them.  I started taking pictures on my way to work and home, going to lunch and getting groceries at the oddly placed, small Smith's Grocery store.  There is a hospital in the Avs.  I go lunch there some days, at the cafeteria.

More on the homes in the Avs later.

I live on 5th South and 1300 East.  Near the University of Utah campus.  Like any university campus, the U of U campus is large and spralled out.  While walking my dog for the past two weeks, I've noticed how wonderful the architecture is in this older part of Salt Lake.  I simply can't believe that whoever owns these homes would rent them out to college students.  I'm sure the insides are beyond repair because the yards are strewn with beer cans.  I am taking pictures of the homes here also.  Because I love the look of some of these homes and because I think a part of me wanted to be an architect or designer.

This home is gorgeous.  It has both brick and rock work as well as the wood siding.  I love the colors.  It makes me think of a cabin in the woods.

I wish I could have gotten closer to this home.  The detail in the windows is awesome.  The front door is a kind of French door.  The windows in the front are big bay windows.   On the second floor, the windows are paned.  A passerby can really tell which of these homes a college student lives in and which a family live in.  This one, I believe, a family live in.
This home looked to me like a home I picture in Maine, near the ocean.  The light gray color with white trim.  The porch which is cornered.  There is an old door that looks haggard and old yet restored to give the home a modern look.
This home has to have a family living in it.  Even the landscaping is neat and tidy.  Check out the front door!  I love the porch.  I could see myself in a swing on that porch, drink in hand, reading a book or chatting with one of my sons.
This house, to me, looks like an old church.  The lines and the windows.  Even the brick and the roof for some reason reminded me of an old church.  Very nice.

A contemporary home that kind of sticks out like a sore thumb in this neighborhood, and yet has a Southwestern feel to it.  I kind of like the boxy shape.  I wish I could have gotten a better picture because the door was very cool.
